This week I was planning to write about gardening, but I have to write about what happened to me this week.
Few months ago I decided to join a group in the church near where I live. This group have visitors for old people and we go there just to make company and talk to them.
I was waiting the group coordinator contact me to know who I will be visiting and what I should do. This contact happened few days ago and today I went to talk to the matron of the nursing home.
The first thing that she asked me was where I came from. I thought it was strange, but I decided to answer and keep going with the interview. She commented about my Irish surname and asked about my background. I answered everything, but at the end she said that she was unsure if they have any old lady for me to visit, because they needed someone local, who knows the Irish's history and geography.
She also said that she would talk to some of the staff and see if they know someone else who knows Irish history, so I can talk to them and then they could link me to one of their patients. At that moment I did not realize what was happening and asked if she knows some NGO where I could volunteer as a public health professional. She answered saying that she will call me in 2 weeks with her final answer.
After thinking about I realized that I do not have the profile that they want just because I am not Irish. They just invited me for the interview because I am using my married name and my husband is Irish. Although I will wait her call, I do not want to go there anymore. The only thing that I am thinking is about the old lady that I could help talking and listening her, which most probably will not happen because I am Brazilian, not Irish.
